MūL is derived from the sanskrit word Mūla which denotes "root" or "base" as well as the Korean word MUL which denotes the basic life sustaining element "water".
Ever since the emergence of openflow and SDN, the need for a commercial grade openly available high performance controller has been apparent and this was the main motivation that kickstarted full blown development of MuL. Although there are 2-3 good controllers in the opensource world, they always seemed misfit to us for one reason or the other.
MuL's design is governed by 1) Reliability 2) Performance and 3) Modular Application Hosting Capability
The choice of language 'C' for its core came naturally as we dont want any language restrictions to hamper its performance. But, at the same time its modular application plugin interface lets any language application use its high performance services.
MuL is licensed under GPLv2. We encourage community involvement in its development and direction. Any application written on top of MuL can (and will) not be considered derivative work and concerned people can keep their high value proprietary application secret sauce hidden but at the same time contribute back improvements to the MuL core for benefit of the community. Professional version of Mul is available in BSD license at a cost for organizations trying to build commercial solutions.
